| My ‘go to’ café when I’m too wrapped up in food to cook, or too many friends come to town. Sandrine serves Gascon home cooking (her maman still puts an appearance in the kitchen) and like all good prix fixe lunch menus, the four courses – for just €13 – start with soup and a carafe of local red on the white-papered tables. Come join the carpenters and cops at this routier supreme when the noon whistle blows | My friend, Jehanne Rignault, is the mistress of all things duck at her ferme auberge – or farm inn – not far from Nerac. All winter Jehanne and her loyal all-female team, Veronique and Driss, tend the ducks and geese from which they preserve her award-winning rillettes, confit de canard and foie gras, of course. In summer they cook and feed us simple, delicious food on long wooden benches in the converted barn | Next to the clock tower in joli Auvillar – officially one of the 100 most beautiful villages in France – Valerie and Serge offer possibly the best food in the area. The freshest organic produce is transformed into creative riffs on classic Gascon cuisine – including tender sweetbreads with chanterelles and foie gras – and a brilliant Gascon steak/frites – duck breast and potatoes sautéed in duck fat | Chef Michel Dussau’s light and spacious restaurant serves the best modern French cuisine in the area – and this is definitely cuisine rather than cooking. There’s duck breast and foie gras galore on the menu, even on the lunchtime Menu Drop, great value at €19 for three courses. It’s always buzzy and the food is good – particularly the homemade bread – but they’re perhaps a little overzealous with the bottle of balsamic glaze… | |||
